So, for you long-time Street Fighter fans, what are your impressions of the new characters? I think they look cool mostly, but the first SF game I ever played was Ultra 4, so I don't really have any basis for any opinions.

I think they look cool mostly, but the first SF game I ever played was Ultra 4, so I don't really have any basis for any opinions. My first Street Fighter game was Third Strike and I think the designs look cool so far. Maybe I like Ken a bit less because I prefer him with short hair, but he's still cool.

I played the beta for sf5 and it's really good, here are my thoughts on the characters in order of favorite to least favorite.
Karin: She continues to be my favorite street fighter character. In fact, I think I like her more in this game than in alpha 3. Her footsies game is ridiculous, with every one of her buttons feeling useful in some way. I really love the differences between the mujinkyakus, giving you a choice between safe pressure, high risk good reward overhead mixup, and combo ender. Her launcher, Sappo, gives her a ton of different combo options so she can really make the most of very hit, leading to devastating crush counter combos. In fact, the Sappo dash is great for all sorts of reasons. Dashing into grab feels really great, just like dashing into grab with Sean in third Strike. The dash into Tenko has become my new favorite move of hers, because that yun looking shoulder is a great form of safe pressure to continue her block strings. Ressenha is good now that it's not a chicken wing motion, and giving it two good followups is really great. Her V-Trigger rekka options are great in so many ways, and is way more intuitive than in alpha 3. All of these great strengths are offset by the fact that nothing she does besides tenko is truly safe on block, which makes her a high risk, high reward character. All in all, Karin is the best.
Birdie: This really wasn't a character I was expecting to like, but he surprised me. I started to like him when I realized he wasn't a close range grappler or a rush punch character, he's actually a grappling zoner, which is super crazy. He has so many options, a close command grab, a full screen command grab, an anti air grab, rush punches, traps, projectiles, the list goes on and on. Not only that, but he has the second best footsies in the game, with only Chun Li having better options than him. I can easily see this character being top tier when the game comes out, just on the merit of all those options.
Chun Li: What can I say, she's always been one of my favorites. Now, Chunners is different in every game, and different versions of her have very different feels to them. I feel like she's a good mix of her third strike and sf4 versions, with some new tricks as well. Right off the bat, making lightning legs a motion move is the best thing they could have possibly done, because I hate mashing out her legs in every game. Having her other specials being charge is perfectly fine. I think this should be the template they follow for chun in the future when they make her moves. Other than that, she's the solid footsies chun we all love.
Necalli: This is a great new character. His playstyle is totally crazy and off the walls, with him always looking to rush you down. His footsies are definitely lacking, but that's what separates him from Karin I think. Karin is a character that dictates the flow of her match with her strong normal buttons and then suddenly catches you off guard with a mixup. Necalli is a character who is always forcing you to react to what he's doing or be swept up into his offensive flow, and when he finally hits something he'll get a huge combo off on you. I also like his visual design a lot, I think he's a very aesthetically pleasing character. All in all, very cool.
Rashid: Also a very good character. He also has a rushdown playstyle (seeing a pattern here?) that is reminiscent of past characters such as El Fuerte, Rolento, Blanka, Decapre, etc. (characters I'm not too fond of). However, I feel like he's better than those characters because he relies a lot more on solid rushdown than surprise factor, given that he has relatively safe pressure but his mixups and crossups are easier to react to than those other characters. His KOF style run is super fun, and his aegis reflector style v-trigger is great for setups.
Ryu: Ryu is Ryu, like always. His combo paths feel way better in this game than in sf4. His parry is a very fun and more balanced than in third strike, and his v-trigger being dengin is the best.
Nash: This is definitely not the Nash from alpha 3, he's basically a new character. His heavy fireball is super crazy, turning a full screen fireball into a high/low/teleport mixup every time. Unfortunately, even though I think he has a lot of cool things going on with him, I don't think I'll play him because he feels really defensive, which you can probably guess that I dislike given the characters I rated high on this list. But, I'll definitely try him out a bit more.
Ken: He's super sick in his game. I really dig his updated looks, and along with his gameplay changes, he feels meaningfully different from Ryu, moreso than any other game in the series. He is now clearly the rushdown shoto that he's always been, compared to the defensive shoto that is ryu. I haven't put as much time into his as other characters but I may rate him higher later on once learn more of his combos in this game.
R. Mika: This is a character that I lowkey hated in alpha 3, because all of her moves were so dumb. But, in this game, literally everything about her is improved. Her special moves, which used to be really stupid, are now very intuitive and fun to play around. She also has really strong footsie buttons for a grappler, and her assist v-trigger is super fun. I'm not too much a fan of the character itself, though. Maybe if they switch around Nadeshiko and Mika in a costume I'll play more of her.
Vega: This is Vega, but better. Being a motion character is much better for him. But, I don't like his moves much anyways, so I'm not really gonna play him much I think.
Bison: This is Bison, but better. He's fun but, again, I don't like his moves much.
Zangief: This is Zangief. I have a hard time doing 360's on keyboard so I don't think I'll play much of him.
Dhalsim: This is Dhalsim. I'm not much of a fan.
Laura: I mean, there's not that much wrong with her, but I really don't like her character, and she plays so much like Abel I just want Abel back.
Cammy: This is Cammy. I've always hated Cammy. I'm sorry, Cammy. I might like you if you put some pants on. Aren't you in the military or something? People in the military don't dress like that. What's your problem? At least go back to your alpha 3 costume, you almost looked cool in that.

God dammit I really want that Bearded Ryu costume but I don't want to have to pre-order the game to get it. Why does Capcom hate me specifically.
