Coquine High School, September 5th, 3:30 PM
A pleasant sun streams through the windows of the school, painting an idyllic scene filled with oranges and yellows. Classes are now out, and students busily chatter among one another in the hallways, excited to be leaving for their homes. A certain warmth permeates through the scene; summer's reach has not yet dissipated. Outside, small white clouds lazily drift through the sky, without a care in the world, simply letting the wind move them to wherever they happen to find themselves. The smell of fresh cut grass is distinct, giving it all a nostalgic feeling. And as more and more students stream out, the building slowly begins to find a sort of peace in the gathering silence.

A young girl of average height, in school uniform, and with reddish, elongated, yet sort of spiky hair waits by the gate of the school, against a wall with a set of earbuds stuck in her ears. Every now and then, she would check her phone to see how long she had been waiting outside the school for, watching everyone roll on by with their own worries and joys to think about, while Samantha, or Sam, as everyone calls her, had to wait for hers. She scoffs when she sees that only a couple of minutes have passed, feeling as though time moves much slower than it actually does move. But, this is just a case of her impatience getting the best of her, yet again. She would always need a little angel on her shoulder telling her not to let the small things like this get to her. However, this so-called angel is just the reason why she's still waiting by the gate in the first place.
Her song ends, and the music stops there. The playlist she set just ran out of songs, and now she doesn't feel like waiting anymore. She gets off from the wall, and would march back into the school. A funny sight that, watching a student walk back into school while everyone's been dying to get out since they got in. She enters through the double doors of the east entrance, and bumps into the boy she's been looking for since the past eight seconds! "Ah, excuse me...," mumbles a familiarly soft voice, the same person the voice came from avoiding eye contact with whoever he bumped into, before realizing that he knows the person he bumped into! "O-oh! Sam... Heya..." Her frustration fades away, and it turns into a scolding yet concerning look. "Come on, Tobes! What took ya so long? You know I don't like waiting, especially when I would rather get something to eat."
Toby, or Tobes, as only Sam calls him, is a pale-skinned boy in similar school uniform as Sam, is just below average height, and has blonde hair that is, in a strange way, neatly messy. He's carrying a potted Alstroemeria flower that's slightly wilting, resting on top of a biology textbook. "Sorry, Sam. I just wanted to help out my homeroom teacher with the flower I gave at the beginning of the year. You see, it's begun to wilt. So, I'm taking it home so I could work my magic on it to make it straight and perked up again, so I can bring it back!" Toby would smile at Sam at the very mention of making someone else happy, and it would make him even happier knowing that he would be able to do it with a flower. As He's made sure everyone in the school know by then, Toby has the greenest thumbs in Coquine High School. He could grow as many flowers as he wants, and he would later gift them to anyone and everyone as a sign of good will. The teachers would get potted flowers to put on their desks, and students would get them in little pots, much smaller and easier to carry around than the ones he had for teachers. Of course, he only gave them out to his homeroom, because flowers to everyone would be a lot of people.
"Yeah, yeah," Sam dismissed. "You're still the nice little boy I remember ya to be, always tryin' to make friends with everyone, and that's gone and got ya stuck with me." "I don't want to think of it as 'being stuck with you', Sam," Toby counters. "I'm glad I'm friends with you!" Toby gives Sam the brightest smile in a while, to show his sincerity. They begin walking from the doors to the exit of the school premises. Sam continues her rant at Toby by saying, "Now that we are stuck with each other, I gotta wait on you before I get to go eat. And boy, I'm starvin'." Toby laughs. "Y-yeah, sorry about that." And the two go their merry little ways...

... Until they find that their path had been obstructed in a rather curious way. The two had been sure that on their way outside of the school, nothing was in their path, as per normal. But, as though he had just suddenly popped into existence, without any sort of entrance, they had found a boy right in front of them as they were attempting to exit the premises. He was taller than the two of them by a noticeable amount, although he was leaning forward with his hands in his pockets, bringing him down to their height. He had a rather bored, perhaps even "shifty" expression to him, his eyes cast to the side, his mouth in a bored expression. His brown hair was rather unique, short in the back, but with long, spiky bangs that stuck out from his head somewhat, swooped over to hide his right eye. His eye color was brown, and they seemed to have some "depth" to them, like they saw more than the average person. He wore the Coquine high school uniform like everyone else, but with a chain sticking out of his back pocket. Curiously, he didn't seem to have a backpack or any sort of school supplies on him.
This boy looks towards Sam and Toby, watches them for half a second, then stood up to his full height. Neither of them recognized him from their grade. Could he be a senior? His expression remains calm and steeled, and the tension is palpable, despite this being a seemingly average encounter. However, suddenly, a friendly smile cut across his face, and he spoke to the two students he saw before him. "Oh ho, what a lucky guy I am!" His voice wasn't particularly deep despite his height, and it could also be described as rather friendly. "It's the famous Toby, prize botanist of Coquine High! Nice to see ya, BUD!" His face twists into the smile that only someone who just said a terrible pun can. "Say, do you have half a moment? I've got something I'd like to say to you."

Toby goes a little red, and he nervously looks left and right expecting the stranger to be talking to someone other than him. But, who else could he talking to? "H-huh? Me..?" As if the answer wasn't obvious already. He didn't know how he got the attention of a senior like this, but it kind of made him nervous, how he was smiling like he was. Toby speaks behind the potted plant. "W-what could I do for you?"
Sam looks the guy up and down. Who does he think he is, scaring poor Tobes like that? "Hey, what's the big idea?" She bumps herself into the conversation, pushing Toby aside a bit. "Can't ya approach someone like a normal person?" As she says this, she reaches to Toby and grabs his head, as is showing the new kid what she's talking about. "You're freaking the guy out." One thing's for certain, Toby was somewhat interested in what the guy had to say, regardless of what Sam thinks of him. He appreciates the effort she put in, though.

"Hey, calm down dude, we're all friends here, aren't we?" The boy looks around, seeing if anyone was around. At this point, the school was almost entirely cleared out. He turns his back to Toby and Sam, obscuring his face. "Ah, I guess I don't have any manners. The name's Liam. Now, I've been hearing quite a bit about you, Toby. Don't worry, all good things. 'Bout your green thumb, and shit like that. Seems you've made quite the impression. You must be popular with the girls, man. Looks like you've even got yourself a girlfriend." He turned around and winked. "Ah ha, just kidding. I think. Anyways, think you could give me some help with a dying plant I have? I'm not good with this sort of thing, and I thought I could get your help."

At the mention of Sam being Toby's girlfriend, she'd get simultaneously embarrassed and angry at Liam, turning beet red. Toby would have noticed her reaction as well, especially since he could feel a familiar heat resonate onto his head via Sam's hand. "Grrr... Now listen here, you-!" But, Toby would interrupt her rant that very moment as he would try and swat Sam's hand from his head, yelling, "Hot, hot, hot...!" in a hushed voice. Sam would quickly remove her hand from Toby's head, and quickly apologize to him. "Sorry, Tobes. I didn't think..." However, she catches herself, and continues. "...think... that I grabbed you so hard! Yup, that was my bad. Sorry, buddy!" she'd turn to Liam smiling nervously, almost as if talking to him instead.
Liam rubs his head, and looks to the side. Before Liam could say anything about the strange scene, he speaks up, looking back at the strange boy. "A-anyways... if you really do have a plant problem, then I could totally help you out. We wouldn't want any flowers dying, now would we...?"

Liam crosses his arms and nods his head. "Yeah, you're totally right. I'm glad I could find you around." It doesn't seem that Liam noticed anything out of the unusual. "Here, follow me, I put the plant in a classroom a bit down the hall." He begins to walk away from the two, slouching forward while he did so. A few seconds later, he turns around and beckons them over. "Don't worry, I'm not gonna bite! Let's get going!"

As Liam strolls back into the school, Toby and Sam exchange glances. "You sure about this, Tobes? We could totally just get somethin' to eat or whatever." Toby thinks about this for a moment, considering his options. In the end, it would feel like he's abandoning a person in need with a flower problem, of all things. He stares at Liam walking back into the school, and then right at Sam. He looks a bit determined. "Sorry, Sam, but if this guy really does need my help, then I feel kinda obliged to help out. I got a reputation to hold up, after all. Y'know, even though I just learned about it." He laughs to himself about the whole thing, and waits for Sam's response.
"Errrr... Fine!" Sam finally responds. "You go ahead and help the guy! But if he tries anything funny, I'll be right behind you to back ya up." This brings Toby's famously bright smile, twice in one day. "Great! After, we'll definitely go grab something to eat. Promise!" Toby walks off into the school after Liam, and Sam follows seconds after.

A minute or so later, Liam had brought the two of them to an inconspicuous door in a second floor hallway that got little traffic. "No one uses this room for some reason." Liam explained. He opened the door to reveal a smaller room, windows on the opposite side facing outwards. The walls had various empty pin boards on them, and a blackboard towards the left side as well. The room itself was sort of messy, with various unopened boxes littering the place, and a few empty bookshelves towards the sides. In the middle of the room, there was a rectangular table, and on it rested a terribly wilted and dried up sunflower in a pot, giving the whole place a depressing feel.
Liam walked up to the plant and sighed. "I've been growing this for a while now, but I just can't seem to get the hang of this. It's like I have a cursed touch, or something like that." he turned back to Toby and crossed his arms. "So, what do you suggest? What can I do to help the poor guy out?"

"Well," Toby began, "Assuming you've been watering it regularly, the real problem is that it's cramped up in this room with no light. It's probably a good idea to put it out into the sun, or at least by the window where sunlight would reach it. In any case, if the sunflower's already begun to wilt, and the petals are already falling off, then it's probably best to let it die, but be sure the seeds get somewhere you want it to. It's honestly a bit unconventional for sunflowers to be set up inside in the first place, but it's still totally possible. Otherwise, you could maybe put it under a full-spectrum fluorescent light bulb, since it's an alright substitution for sunlight." Toby walks towards the sunflower to get a closer look at it, as Sam would rest against the door frame to watch Toby in action.
Toby picks up the plant by the base of the pot the plant rested on, being very careful not to actually touch the plant in case he were to do something by accident that he wouldn't want to do in front of another student. Toby looks at Liam. "Do you have anywhere else to put this guy?"

Liam's eyes glazed over as Toby began to describe the proper way to take care of a plant, staring off into space blankly. When Toby asked him a question, however, he snapped back to reality. "Uh, no, not really, this place is pretty convenient for me, you see." Liam's expression subtly changes from a happy smile to a more neutral gaze. "Are you really sure that all it needs is sunlight? I'm not going to doubt your judgement, that seems a little... simplistic. You're the expert here, you must know all the intricacies of how a plant grows." He very slowly begins to lean in towards Toby. "Is that your secret to growing all of those plants so well in such a short amount of time? Plentiful sunlight? Are you sure there isn't something... more to it?"

A small bead of sweat drops from Toby's head, and he nervously answers, "Y-yeah, I'm fairly certain that this is the r-right way of doing this kinda stuff..." He looks to the side to avoid eye contact. "I just never... thought of it being that fast, y'know...? Heheheh..." All the while, Sam watches the scene, growing restless.

Liam looked towards Toby for a few more seconds before backing off, going to stand off to the side. "Yeah, I suppose you're right... In the end, these things just have simple solutions, don't they..." He turns his back to Toby and Sam, walking over to gaze out the window. "I appreciate your help, Toby. You're a real nice person, I hope you know that." He hangs his down a bit, thinking to himself. "It's just that, this sunflower, it was given to me by my girlfriend. It was for our one year anniversary, not too long ago. But, just over a week ago, she had to move to another state because of her dad's work. And, since I don't know anything about plants, it's begun to die..." he clenches his fists momentarily, remembering everything that had happened. "Here, I'll tell you what. How about you take this flower off my hands for a bit, do whatever you need to do to make it healthy again, and you can give it back to me when you think it's ready. I don't know if that's too much to ask for, but this is something that's very important to me..." He trails off, waiting for a response.

Toby thinks about the situation for a moment of time. Poor Liam, sitting alone in this room, thinking of a lost love dying as slowly and as painfully as the flower... Toby is, as one could see, a huge sap for this kind of stuff. He had to help Liam with the flower! "I can definitely help you, in that case! You don't have to worry, because I'll find a way to mend it back at my place. It's where I'm at my peak, I'm told..." Toby chuckles lightly. Meanwhile, Sam would become more at ease, but she still had an eye on Liam.

Liam smiles a bit, pleased with what Toby said. "Hey, thanks a ton, man. I'll let you two go now. Come down to this room after school when you think it's good, I'll probably be here." He sits down in a chair by the table in the center and begins to scroll through his phone. "See you later."
